cats do love the post July 30, 2010 Ty_P Our cats love to claw on both of the post we have for them.
But that doesn't stop them from clawing else where!!!!!!!!!!!
Great scratching post! July 21, 2010 Mary K. Taylor (Winter Park, FL) This is well worth the money! All three of my cats love it and it's holding up quite well to their abuse. I imagine that this will last me at least a couple of years. Very good value. My furniture thanks you, SmartCat!
Not for older cats July 20, 2010 mattgb1 (New York City) Contrary to the ad, I was unable to teach my elderly (10-year-old) cats to use this product, even with the help of catnip and the same techniques I had used for training them on the standard (carpet) post when they were kittens. This is now an attractive piece of furniture.
Motor home...scratching posts July 15, 2010 L. Rogers It took a little time and attention - Ms. Kitty had been using a carpet covered system for a few years. Unfortunately, my recently purchased motor home had carpet available for about 16 inches around the bedroom walls and bed base. Also, she found herself feeling "unwonderful" while the engine and road noises were audible. At 72, I had decided that I was not particularly concerned about resale value. I found that a simple "No" caused her to interrupt the scratching in the bedroom. I placed the post adjacent to my recliner and would rub the post after petting her. Also, I would pat the post to get her attention. At times, I would try to attract her with a toy that she preferred. As she began to try the post, I would only give a verbal approval. She learned to use it within a few days - at least when I am present. Consequently, I have ordered a second one for our home and will dispose of the old carpet covered system.
Great scratching post - Hope people will consider products like this instead of declawing June 24, 2010 Shantybird (United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My two cats love this scratching post. They're adolescent cats with a lot of energy, and my female cat loves to climb. My male cat is large and scratches vigorously, so he wouldn't use the sisal scratching pad I bought that hangs on a door handle (the wobbling made him nervous). Neither cat is interested in cardboard scratchers, but they liked to scratch the sides of the sofa, the corners of my mattress, and my throw rugs.
So, the reasons this post is great for them: It's very stable. The base screws on and the whole thing sits on the carpet without needing to be anchored into anything (helpful since I'm a renter). The first time I set it up, our female cat climbed up the post and tried to get onto the top. (The top is too slippery for her to pull herself up, but you could add something with more traction.) The post is stable enough for a medium-sized cat to scale it without tipping, and it's steady enough for my larger cat to enthusiastically scratch on.
The sisal surface is dense and they can really get their claws into it. It looks like it'll last a while. Most days when I come home, each cat comes up to the post near the front door and does a quick wake-up scratch.
The post is more than tall enough for both cats to stretch out as high as they want while scratching. Since the scratching post has four sides, both cats can scratch on it at once if they want.
Since buying it, my cats scratch the furniture a lot less, and if they forgot I just direct them to the scratching post. They don't spend a ton of time scratching it -- though they get excited if I tape a dangling toy from the top -- but it seems to fulfill their need to scratch and mark their territory. (For the bed scratching problem, adding a dust ruffle over the box spring helps, and I put the over-the-door sisal scratcher on the floor next to the bed so they have something else to scratch on.)
