The North States Extra Wide Swing Gate offers parents an affordable choice for closing off a large area for either a child or a pet. The Extra Wide allows children and pets to be confined to an area where mom or dad will have total supervision. It extends up to an amazing 8.5 feet (103 in.) and stands at 27 inches high. However, unlike other North States gates it does not work with small areas at all. The smallest opening it can work with is 5 feet (57 in.). It is great for blocking off a porch or other wide areas. The gate can be removed with ease from its hardware mount when not in place. The North States Extra Wide Swing Gate can swing out of the way with ease when not locked in place. It is made of a durable, deluxe wood, perfect for any home decor.

 Does NOT work for openings less than 60" July 31, 2010

The packaging states that it works for openings from 57" inches wide. We tried to install it on a 58" doorway. The actual gate end-to-end, with the latches on either side, actually measures 58.5". Add in the size of the bolts you have to drill in your doorway, and it's just not going to fit in any doorways smaller than 60". And the latch is nearly impossible to open. After a lot of cursing, we're sending this back and shelling out for the much nicer Dream Baby brand.

The gate works beautifully and was easy to install. The latching mechanism is tiny bit awkward, so we tend to step over rather than open it, but it's exactly what we needed.

This is an aesthetic gate that simply is too flimsy when spanning near its maximum length - but keep in mind that there are few [if any] other gates that can span this far. I reinforced the joints with screws at the section overlaps and added steel plates where the gate sections abut, and it works fine. I've had mine now for 4 years and it isolates my giant schnauzers as well as grandkids from falling down a wide staircase or separating the dogs from the kids. The caveat is that with these reinforcements the gate is fixed length - and this works only if you are attached on the hinge side to a wall that is at least as long as the gate so it goes flat against a wall without blocking something while open. Without reinforcements it could slide together to shorten the gate when open. Buy it only if you are a little handy with tools. The eye screws for the locking side must be spaced vertically at their PRECISE specified distance apart or else catching both locking eyelets becomes impossible.

We needed this for a wide space to keep 2 dogs in a certain area of the house. Works awesome!

I have a 9lb yorkie who the gate works perfect for... and a friend has a 4lb yorkie who can fit through the gate rungs with ease. I didn't screw it into the wall I just put it between the fridge and the wall and put a pillow up against the other end to keep it up. Cheap and it practically comes put together. The wood was cracked at one part where the metal clasps hold the other piece of wood next to it but my boyfriend put some woodworkers glue and masking tape around it for about 48hrs and it holds beautifully now. If you're looking for a cheap gate for a large opening this is perfect for you!
